From 28 August - 1 September, The Booker School ran its first ever 'Creative Critters Camp'. The camp was open to any of Nova Scotia's community members, aged 3-7, with a thirst for learning, creating and connecting with the world around them. The week was packed
with hands-on activities, including building critter houses, making butterfly food, going on a scavenger hunt, making cakes, dancing, making dry clay critters, playing outdoors, printing designs on canvas bags and making homemade playdough.
The camp was led by specialist teachers. Rachel, The Booker School's Visual Arts teacher, reflected, “What a creative week it was scavenging for bits and pieces to make a critter home, designing clay critters, printing and painting. I really loved the children's response to the printing demonstration; they all clapped when they saw the colorful butterfly transferred to the fabric … like magic.”
The week-long camp was also an opportunity for parents in the wider community to connect with some of The Booker School’s teachers.
The Creative Critters Camp gave these children an opportunity to engage in a range of open and guided inquiry activities. These were led from our Reggio-inspired Early Years classroom to our kitchen and out to our grounds. The provocations and activities provided were a good example of what The Booker School offers and for many families with young students, this was a great taster. The camp was well received by all that attended it, and the school hopes to run more in the near future.
